Why a Bosphorus Cruise Is Worth It

One of my favorite things about taking a Bosphorus cruise is getting a break from the crowds and traffic that Istanbul is famous for. Seeing the city from the water feels surprisingly peaceful, even in the middle of such a massive city.

You will pass Ottoman palaces, waterfront mansions, ferries crossing between Europe and Asia, and famous landmarks like Maiden’s Tower while watching the skyline change around you.

I especially recommend doing a sunset cruise if you can. Watching the mosques begin to light up as the sun goes down over the Bosphorus is honestly one of the most beautiful experiences in Istanbul.

Tips for Booking a Bosphorus Cruise in Istanbul

Book sunset cruises early

Sunset cruises are by far the most popular option, especially during summer and holidays, so they tend to sell out first. I would recommend booking at least a few days ahead if you are visiting during peak season.

Avoid midday cruises in summer

Istanbul gets surprisingly hot and humid in July and August, especially on the water, where there is very little shade on some yachts. Personally, I think late afternoon and sunset cruises are much more enjoyable.

If you choose to go during the day, don’t forget your sunscreen so you don’t burn.

Bring an extra layer at night

Even after hot days, the Bosphorus can get windy and cool once the sun goes down, especially if you are sitting on the upper deck. I almost always bring a light jacket or sweater for evening cruises.

Private cruises are best with groups

Private Bosphorus cruises can seem expensive at first, but they become much more reasonable when split between several people. If you are traveling with friends or family, it is often a much better experience than booking multiple spots on a crowded public cruise.

Confirm your pickup location beforehand

Some cruises only depart from certain piers on the European side, while others offer pickups from both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. Always double-check before booking because traffic near the Bosphorus bridges can be brutal, especially around sunset.
