That said, it is a solid option if you want something more customized or are looking for a specific type of vehicle.

Pro tip: As I said, however, it is really important to check the reviews. $10 cheaper for a 3-star isn’t worth it in my opinion.

It also makes a big difference if you leave something behind. It is far easier to track down a scheduled driver than a taxi you found at the airport.

One time I grabbed a taxi from the airport when I was exhausted after a long flight, and I accidentally left my carry on in the trunk.

I was so tired that I forgot to take a photo of the license plate or any details about the driver. Thankfully, the driver brought it back to the airport the next morning and I was able to recover it.

If he had not done that, I would have had no way of tracking it down.

Transportation Alternatives to Airport Transfers

If you are not sure about booking a private transfer, there are a few other ways to get from the airport into the city.

Each option works, but based on my experience, some are much easier than others depending on your situation.

HavaIST and Havabus (Best Budget Option)

These are large airport shuttle buses that run between the airports and key locations around the city. HAVAIST services the IST airport. HAVABUS services SAW airport.

They are comfortable, relatively affordable, and a good option if you are trying to save money. That said, you will still need to get from the drop off point to your hotel, which can be a hassle if you have luggage.

One time I accidentally got on the wrong bus and did not realize it until after I had already paid, so definitely double check before boarding. Thankfully they were able to give me a refund.

• People staying near major drop off points
• Those comfortable navigating a bit after arrival

Metro and Public Transport (Best for Experienced Travelers)

Both Istanbul airports now have metro connections that can get you surprisingly far into the city. This is the cheapest option, but it does require some planning.

If you have a lot of luggage or are arriving during busy times, it can quickly become overwhelming. I would only recommend this if you are comfortable using public transportation in a new city and are traveling light.

Pro tip: If the hotel offers to get you a transfer, unless you’re at Stanpoli Hostel, you will likely charged much more and should just order your own.

Taxis (Most Unpredictable)

Taxis are easy to find at the airport and will take you directly to your destination. I have used them many times without any issues, but they are the most inconsistent option.

Between fluctuating prices, traffic, and the risk of leaving something behind, they are not my first choice anymore.

Airports in Istanbul

There are two main airports in Istanbul that you might fly into, and which one you arrive at can affect your transfer time.

Istanbul Airport (IST)

This is the main international airport and where most long haul flights arrive.

It is located on the European side of the city, but it can still take anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour to reach central areas depending on traffic.

Most travelers will land here, and all of the transfer options in this guide apply.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW)

This airport is located on the Asian side of Istanbul and is often used for regional or budget flights.

It is further from popular tourist areas like Sultanahmet and Taksim, which means transfer times can be longer.

If you are staying on the Asian side, especially in Kadikoy, this airport can actually be more convenient.
